Helping Fund Our Own Demise

Whatever one feels about the Ground Zero mosque, I think we can all agree the State Dept. shouldn’t be sponsoring the travels of the mosque’s Imam:

US State Dept Sends Mosque Imam to Mideast

State Department officials on Monday confirmed Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Imam of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque, will soon be going on a trip of the Middle East and the U.S. government will be picking up the tab.

The planned construction of a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City has set off a contentious national debate over religious freedom in the U.S., drawing impassioned opposition from some families of 9/11 victims.

This fits in with an idea I have long considered – that beside Islam itself, the greatest promoter of Islamic religion in the US and the world is the secular Left.

Why in the world are we picking up the tab? How in the world does that work?

There’s no mistake about it, this Mosque is not “Muslim outreach” as they have said. It is merely one more in a line of markers that they place at the sites of military victories. There is nothing particularly “holy” to Muslims about the Al Aqsa mosque in Jeruselem. It is merely a mosque they built to commemorate their military victory when they took over that piece of land.

While I think that we should have freedom of religion and that anyone who wants to pay for a mosque out of their own money should be allowed to build one wherever they have an opportunity to (be it next to the previous location of the twin towers or thousands of miles away), I do not think the govt should help fund any of it.
